Preliminary exercise LR

1) Type up your teacher's feedback in full.
  • great camerawork + focus. Excellent to see so many closups 
  • Music is stranger things (or perhaps blade runner 2049) I think too recent to use it, hard to think of anything else except S.T. once hear it. One to be considered for the real thing 
  • Performances perhaps a little shaky at the start but gets better 
  • Brilliant use of enigma: not showing the audience the villain works so well. Simple but a classic horror convention
  • The second scene arguably better... great use of effects and editing. eyes are so creepy: very well done! almost works like a trailer already 
  • audio levels not quite right 

2) Using a combination of your own reflection on the preliminary exercise and your teacher feedback, write three WWW bullet points (What Went Well) and three EBI bullet points (Even Better If...) for your film.

WWW:

  • Editing was good
  • the camerawork was also effective
  • enigma codes were effective and created mystery 
EBI
  • The plot didn't make the most sense
  • as said before, the beginning was a little off
  • Audio levels were off


3) How effectively did you complete the objective you laid out in your preliminary exercisestatement of intent?

I believe that I was quite accurate with what I had written on my statement of intent, although I could have worked on my representations a little more

4) What have you learned from the preliminary exercise that will help you in the actual coursework project?

 Make sure your setting is confirmed before you start filming, along with this a more expansive shot list is helpful 
5) Now you have completed the preliminary exercise, what are your current plans for your actual coursework? This could include genre, narrative, characters, filming locations etc.

 I may try to film a coming of age trailer in central London, different actors (the same amount, may act myself)

Editing Task

This is the opening scene is from the movie Apocalypse Now. This scene shows how to artfully use dissolve cuts to make an elegant scene. The scene first starts a  fade  into a seemingly peaceful scene of trees. Slowly the music begins to kick in with the sound of helicopter blades (a helicopter flies in front of the shot to further solidify this assumption) in the background and a green mist growing within the shot. The scenery then begins to change suddenly and begins to fill with explosions, this shows audiences the true chaos of war and how destructive it can be. The camera then begins to slowly  pan  to the right as the smog and smoke begins to thicken, this increase in smoke helps create a very effective  transition  for a  dissolved transition  of a man, presumably apart of the war that is commencing, having flashbacks of what he had seen during battle. Film & TV Language: Mise-en-scene star persona

This transformation was inspired by Demons in movies, tv shows, and even video games. I wanted to go for a horror theme with the editing and the sound effects used in the first scene. For the makeup in the task, I used my sisters help to create large black holes around my eyes. This was done to make my face seem unusual than how it usually is, this was done due to a scientific study that has shown that beings that look like humans but don't share the same traits (e.g normal eyes, face, etc) create fear more easily. The horns are DIY create with paper mache, I chose to create the horns since its a typical attribution of demons to have, but I've chosen to attach them in a different way (Resembling some of the figures above). I chose to use glitchy editing techniques as it used commonly in horror movies

Moonlight Review

Moonlight follows the life story of a homosexual African-American man named Chiron in a rough drug-ridden Miami. The movie follows the narrative in three separate sections, each showing different stages of Chiron's life and the problems he faced with his sexuality. In the first stage of the movie, Chiron is portrayed to be a quiet boy that speaks very few words, this alone already gives the audience an understanding as to how little affection he had received in his childhood, being ignored by his mother and not knowing his father leaves a toll on him as a child which is again portrayed by how he speaks very little, even when he is shown love and affection by Juan and Teresa, but this lack of a father figure opens way to and important character Juan, a local drug dealer, Juan, and Teresa were the only people that cared for Chiron, this effection goes a long way as Teresa then becomes a parental figure for Chiron as his real mother is constantly on drugs.
