Coursework: Preliminary exercise

1) State the genre you have chosen - horror or coming of age drama.

Horror

2) Choose at least five films in your selected genre and watch the trailer and one scene from each film. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

28 weeks later:

  • Intense Music track
  • jump scares
  • fast editing

Hereditary:

  • Plenty of enigma codes
  • match on action
  • also fast paced
  • uncomfortable imagery and iconography
  • Modern Mise-un-scene
Blairwitch:
  • POV shots
  • fast-paced editing
  • serious sense of enigma
  • normal mise-en-scene
  • Forrest setting

3) Write a 250 word statement of intent for your film scene. This should follow AQA's guidance (look in your coursework booklet) and clearly lay out how you will use media language to meet your brief. You should also discuss what representations you plan to create (either reinforcing or challenging stereotypes) and how your scene would appeal to an audience.

A level Statement of intent

I will be creating a 2 minute and 30 seconds horror scene that takes place near the beginning of a horror film, there is a sense of genre hybridity between a horror and coming of age, the film will be shot on a Cannon 700D DSLR with mostly 50MM lens; the scene follows two friends entering a house where a friend had once committed suicide and are trying to come to terms with the lost friend, the house they enter and was due to be demolished but seems to be mysteriously untouched. I plan on using multiple enigma codes in order to make the audience question and assume for themselves of what is going on during the scene. I will be using post production methods to colour correct the scene to make it seem more dark and "cool".

The main audience demographic I am trying to attract with the my film would be mid teens to adults (age ranging between 15-30), I have used teenagers to help not only become more relatable (uses and gratification theory) to younger teens representing what their friendships are like but to also try and create nostalgia for older audiences watching the scene reminding them of when they were younger and the decisions that they had to make when it came to friends.

My main actors for the production belong to minorities, this was done to help and show a more diverse London, the actors are also wearing modern clothing which is popular with today's younger generations, this si done to further apply emphasis on the young modern nature of the scene/film.

4) Write a script for your film scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional scripts).

SCRIPT:

Jack: Her mum said they called contractors to take the house down after her death, contractors came, they got all this done
Kara: Did they stop midway
one of them died too, they never finished the job, kept on saying they saw someone or something.
Karam: Damn, is that why we have these? To finish the job?
Holds up bat
Jack: Nah, she would have to told us

5) Storyboard at least five key shots from your scene, take a photo of the storyboard and upload it to your blogpost. What visual style are you trying to create? Storyboard sheets are available in DF07.

6) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

7) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting.

Lighting:
Flash lights
propp:
a sledge hammer as a prop along with flash lights and a metal pendant.
Setting:
Karam's house currently being refurbished as a setting and poorly lit street
Make up:
No make up
8) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by Wednesday 27 June. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.
