TV: Postmodernism and Deutschland 83

1) Read the section on Strinati's five ways to define postmodernity. What examples are provided of the breakdown of the distinction between culture and society (media-isation)?

The characters Borat and Bruno would most likely be recognized rather than the actors that play them, this shows that reality portrayed by media can sometimes be seen as more real than reality itself. It also shows that in most cases the marketing of a product can sometimes be more important than the quality of it.

2) What is Fredric Jameson's idea of 'historical deafness'? How can the idea of 'historical deafness' be applied to Deutschland 83?

With modernization comes the progressive loss of accurate cultural historical accuracy, this shown with Deutschland 83 and their music choice e.g. sweet dreams.
3) What examples and theories are provided for the idea of 'style over substance'?

Two examples are given:
Big brother
Paris Hilton, a celebrity who is famous without talent

4) What examples from music are provided for the breakdown of the distinction between art and popular culture? Can this be applied to Deutschland 83?

High brow entertainment intended for the elite and powerful e.g. opera, ballet theater etc.
Pop culture such as mainstream film and music is intended for the masses of society.

5) What is bri8colage? What examples of bricolage can be found in Deutschland 83?

A bricolage is a process of adapting and juxtapositioning of old and new texts and images to produce brand new meanings, two examples of this include the spy training montage and the opening scene that included both shakespeare and Karl Marx.

6) How can the audience pleasures of Deutschland 83 be linked to postmodernism? Read 'The decline of meta-narratives' and 'Media texts and the postmodern' to help answer this.

The nostalgia from Deutschland 83 can be linked to postmodernism, an example of this would be the technology, foods and items that were new and or special in the 80's (the walkman) and our new modern day perspective towards them.

7) Read the analysis of media concepts and postmodern approaches on page 3 of the factsheet. Choose three of the concepts and write an example from Deutschland 83. Clue: genre, representation, ideology and audience would all be good options for this task.

Genre: The subgenre spy thriller was given emphasis through camerawork, music and typical movie cliches from that genre

Representation: This was shown through the contrasting representation between east and West Germany.

Audience: Due to the fact that Deutschland 83 was positively received in the UK and US audiences and wasn't in Germany shows the show wasn't viewed consciously.

8) Now look at page 4 of the factsheet. How does Deutschland 83 demonstrate aspects of the postmodern in its construction and ideological positioning

9) Which key scenes from Deutschland 83 best provide examples of postmodernism? Why?

10) Why might audiences enjoy the postmodern aspects of Deutschland 83? What audience pleasures might elements of bricolage or pastiche provide viewers?

I believe that the main aspects of pleasure is from both the nostalgia and surveillance pleasures given by the show, nostalgia from the introduction of nostalgic items and pop culture references and surveillance from the historical accuracy.
