Marxism & hegemony: blog tasks

1) Re-read the Mail Online review of Capital. Why does it suggest that Capital features a left-wing ideology?

There are two reasons as to why the article suggests Capital features a left-wing ideology, the first reason is due to the fact that the sympathetic main characters are all POC and or immigrants, the second reason is that the main characters that aren't POC are relatively vile characters (except for the petunia and her grandson) or are clueless (the police officers)

2) Choose three quotes from the review that are particularly critical of Capital and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why?

  • "But that concept went nowhere. The residents were bemused, but not scared" I agree with this point as the "We want what you have" plotline seemed at first to be the main narrative in capital; instead it seemed to be more of a subplot.
  • "The last 20 minutes contained no plot. Whatever story there had ever been was over. We just watched all the characters saying goodbye to each other" I believe that this has an ounce of truth to it since this was the case
  • "was dragged off to the cells by anti-terror police who were, naturally, bigoted and faceless" This quote is also quite true as the police seemed as what the quote states, bigoted and faceless.
3) What scenes or characters from Capital could be read as promoting left-wing ideology?
The traffic warden heavily supports the left-wing ideology, along with her I believe that the concept of a heavily diverse society was supported by the kumal family was also quite left wing.

4) What about the other side of the argument - are there any aspects of Capital that reinforce the status quo in capitalist London?
I believe that the white and foreign bankers were a prime example of a typical western capitalist society.

1) Why did the Daily Mail suggest The Casual Vacancy promoted a left-wing ideology?
Due to the show's portrayal of the wealthier residents and the plot ridiculing them for them for their plot of trying to sell the food bank and the rehab center.

2) How does the article suggest characters, narrative and setting are used to promote a left-wing
ideology?
Due to some the characters the show that promotes a left-wing mentality e.g.Barry Fairbrothe, this character often showed his hatred towards places closing and often does this through speeches.

3) What research is quoted regarding BBC bias and what did it find? Do you think the BBC is biased?
The quote regarding the BBC bias is "is the BBC too cosy with JK.Rowling". I don't believe that the BBC is biased.

4) Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests people are kept under control through active consent - the control of 'common sense'. How could you apply the Daily Mail or the BBC to the idea of hegemony and dominant ideologies in the UK media?

Gramsci's theory of hegemony states that people are kept under control through consent. Since the Daily mail supports the views of many right-wing people, the portrayal of ideologies and beliefs seems like common sense to the right-wing supporters, the same can be applied to the general population with the BBC.
